Alas, Mother Nature didn’t cooperate and Great Mountain Forest is cancelling its open house for Saturday. Forester Russell Russ says, “There just isn’t enough sap to even come close to trying to boil. Not even close…. Very slim chance that enough sap will flow on Saturday so we could boil on Sunday, but we will take a look Saturday afternoon” and make an announcement then.
Here’s a chance to visit the Great Mountain Forest sugarhouse and see how sap is boiled down to make maple syrup…you might even get a sample! The season has to cooperate and the times may change, so check back here for updates or call the forestry office (860-542-5422) before going. You can enjoy skiing or hiking the forest trails that start near the sugarhouse whatever the weather.
If the sugarhouse is open, GMF tells us, they’ll be offering half-gallon jugs of syrup for the special price of $35, just during Weekend in Norfolk.
