Slide Talk: A Connecticut Steeplechase
February 22 at 2:00 pm - 3:00 pmFree
When Norfolk’s Church of Christ decided in 1811 that it was time to construct a new meetinghouse, they specified only two things: to build “as good a house as you can for Six Thousand Dollars” and that it be “a meeting house with a steeple.” Not a cupola, like recently-constructed churches in nearby Salisbury and South Canaan, but a steeple. Why were steeples so important in early 19th century Connecticut and what did they look like? Find out more in this slide lecture by Ann Havemeyer, sponsored by the Norfolk Historical Society.
