Tour of Historic Center Cemetery
July 31, 2020 - November 30, 2021
FreeCenter Cemetery is the oldest of Norfolk’s burial grounds, established in 1757 on Old Colony Road. Many Norfolk notables are interred there, including James Mars, who in 1798 at the age of eight was the last slave bought and sold in Norfolk. Mars was freed at age 21, eventually wrote an autobiography and lived until 1880. This virtual tour is led by historian William Hosley, former curator of the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford, and former director of Connecticut Landmarks.
