SUMMARY:Open Sugar House (cancelled)
DESCRIPTION:We’re sorry\, Great Mountain Forest says the weather isn’t cooperating. There will not be enough sap collected for boiling for WIN weekend\, so this event is cancelled. \nGreat Mountain Forest‘s sugar house will be open to visitors\, provided there is enough sap to boil. The Forest has a 70-year tradition of collecting and boiling sap\, making maple syrup and bottling it for sale; its collection system and evaporator are thoroughly up to date\, but heat for boiling still comes from wood. GMF staff will be on hand to explain it all. We suggest visitors call ahead; as soon as staff know\, they will put a message on the forestry office answering machine (860-542-5422) indicating whether there is enough sap to boil. Cross your fingers!

DESCRIPTION:Battell Chapel’s beautiful stained glass windows were designed by D. Maitland Armstrong and Louis Comfort Tiffany. Three large windows designed by Armstrong and made of opalescent glass fill the west end of the chapel. Tiffany’s five smaller windows face them from the east; they depict the four seasons\, with a brilliant sunrise at the center. \nAlso on view are the Eldridge Memorial window and pulpit in the Church of Christ Meeting House. The window is beautiful Bavarian-style stained glass in a floral motif of vining red roses\, grapes and Easter lilies. Both the chapel and the main church will be open for viewing between 1:00 and 4:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Guided tours will start on the hour\, at 1:00\, 2:00 and 3:00 p.m.
