DESCRIPTION:This exhibition focuses on the lives of Dr. Frank Egler\, ecologist\, and his wife\, the photographer Happy Kitchel Egler\, two Connecticut pioneers of natural area preserve conservation. \nIt highlights Aton Forest’s scientific research work and the history of the Egler and Kitchel families’ conservation work in Norfolk and Colebrook\, Connecticut. Aton has owned the Egler Preserve\, a 1500-acre natural and semi-natural area\, since 1926. As of 2026\, it is acquiring the Spaulding Pond Preserve\, a 1000-acre natural area\, the creation of Happy Kitchel Egler\, reuniting husband and wife under the Forest’s umbrella. \nThe exhibition also sheds light on Egler’s relationship with Rachel Carson\, who ushered in the modern global environmental era.

Well before military engagement\, townsfolk gathered to respond to the British blockade of Boston harbor on June 1\, 1774. Norfolk took its first collective actions of support and preparation: to send relief to the inhabitants of Boston\, to levy a tax of one half penny on the pound to procure gunpowder and to establish a pesthouse for small pox.

DESCRIPTION:Take a guided tour of Whitehouse\, formerly the home of Ellen Battell and Carl Stoeckel\, who built the Music Shed in 1906. Ellen’s will left her estate in trust for Yale’s use and it is now the home of the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival\, a program of the Yale School of Music. \nTours start at the back door\, on the campus side of the house. Tour groups are limited in size. \nThis event is part of the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival‘s summer open house\, which also includes a concert for children at 1:30 p.m. and an ice cream social from 2:00 to 3:00\, both at the Music Shed.
