DESCRIPTION:Join the Norfolk Library for this special summer event as it wraps up its Summer Reading with Nile the Inflatable Humpback Whale. Explore a life-sized inflatable whale and allow it to spark your curiosity and inspire ocean stewardship. Inside\, children explore whale anatomy\, uncover conservation challenges\, and discover how whales—and the ocean—connect to our daily lives\, no matter where we live. It’s a hands-on\, immersive experience that sparks curiosity and wonder. While waiting for their turn\, participants can take part in activities like matching whale tails\, exploring real artifacts and learning how to protect the ocean through our Whale Safe Habits campaign.  \nThere are two timeslots to experience Nile\, with a sweet treat offered in between. Limited to 20 per timeslot\, ages 5 and up. Register here.

Join birder Laurie Green from Great Mountain Forest and the Norfolk Land Trust for a relaxed\, 45-minute session focused on identifying local birds and native plants found in our own City Meadow. Learn tips for recognizing common species by sight and sound\, discover interesting ecological connections and sharpen your observation skills. Whether you’re new to birding and plant identification or already enjoy spending time outdoors\, this walk is a fun way to deepen your appreciation of the local townscape. \nThis program is free and open to all ages. Bring binoculars if you have them\, wear comfortable walking shoes and dress for the weather.

DESCRIPTION:This exhibition focuses on the lives of Dr. Frank Egler\, ecologist\, and his wife\, the photographer Happy Kitchel Egler\, two Connecticut pioneers of natural area preserve conservation. \nIt highlights Aton Forest’s scientific research work and the history of the Egler and Kitchel families’ conservation work in Norfolk and Colebrook\, Connecticut. Aton has owned the Egler Preserve\, a 1500-acre natural and semi-natural area\, since 1926. As of 2026\, it is acquiring the Spaulding Pond Preserve\, a 1000-acre natural area\, the creation of Happy Kitchel Egler\, reuniting husband and wife under the Forest’s umbrella. \nThe exhibition also sheds light on Egler’s relationship with Rachel Carson\, who ushered in the modern global environmental era.
