SUMMARY:Garden Tour: Formal Borders
DESCRIPTION:Behind the border of flowering shrubs and trees that lines the roadside\, lies an Arts and Crafts-style house and garden built in 1908. With a few liberties\, the owners have recreated the original garden designed by Marian Coffin\, restoring the small\, formal parterre extending south from the house and executing the large double border below the west side of the house with the help of an early working plan. A half moon of dwarf and semi-dwarf evergreens\, originally created to take advantage of the serendipitous gift of many specimens\, has developed into a magnificent screen embracing an additional perennial bed. \nPark on the road and walk down the driveway to the house. Some steps. \nClick here to download a two-page list of all five Norfolk garden tours on Sunday\, August 2.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Norfolk 1776
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition at the Norfolk Historical Society museum presents snippets of life in Norfolk in the years before\, during and after the Revolutionary War\, and the impact of that war on the town’s residents. Well before military engagement\, townsfolk gathered to respond to the British blockade of Boston harbor on June 1\, 1774. Norfolk took its first collective actions of support and preparation: to send relief to the inhabitants of Boston\, to levy a tax of one half penny on the pound to procure gunpowder and to establish a pesthouse for small pox.

DESCRIPTION:Battell Chapel’s beautiful stained glass windows were designed by D. Maitland Armstrong and Louis Comfort Tiffany. Three large windows designed by Armstrong and made of opalescent glass fill the west end of the chapel. Tiffany’s five smaller windows face them from the east; they depict the four seasons\, with a brilliant sunrise at the center. \nBoth the chapel and the main church will be open for viewing between 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday\, and a half-hour guided tour starts at 1:30 p.m. On Sunday\, viewing hours are between 12:00 and 2:00 and the tour starts at 1:00.

SUMMARY:Garden Tour: Community Garden

In the fall we will involve the fifth and sixth graders in an after school program to continue this exciting adventure. \nOur resident certified master composter\, Doug Semmes\, will be onsite operating our composting setup and discussing its usefulness and the science behind it. SUMMARY:Garden Tour: Feeding Body and Soul
DESCRIPTION:“Our garden’s focus is to feed us\, our chickens\, our bees and our souls\,” say the owners. They practice organic methods\, remove invasives and embrace a natural feel. \nAt its heart is the kitchen garden they have been developing behind their house\, coping with a slope\, wet soil and Connecticut’s many stones. There are cold frames along the retaining wall\, raised beds surrounded by gravel and espaliered apples and pears on the fence. Perennial beds surround a future bocce court to complete the picture\, with room left for bee hives and their chickens. \nIn front of the house\, the mood is different. Here native plants have been allowed to naturalize into a meadow. Green and white dominate\, with some soft color in season. \nThe owners also have cooperated with their neighbors to create connecting pathways through the woods between them. \nClick here to download a two-page list of all five Norfolk garden tours on Sunday\, August 2.

SUMMARY:Garden Tour: Woodland Pathways
DESCRIPTION:When the owners\, both garden designers\, acquired the house and garden next door\, they decided to use the intervening woodland to link the two. Large shrubs and a lawn form a transition from the mature garden surrounding their original house into the woods beyond\, where an artful network of pathways and shade plantings leads to the second property or allows the visitor to explore. The gardens around the second house\, now their residence\, are being restored and expanded\, and the vegetable beds have been planted with a new variety of crops. \nPark on the road and walk up the driveway to take the loop from the first garden through the woods to the second garden\, and down its driveway to the road again. Some slopes and steps. \nClick here to download a two-page list of all five Norfolk garden tours on Sunday\, August 2.
