We just got word from naturalist John Anderson that this week’s snow and freezing rain have created a thick crust on the North Brook Trail. Even his snowshoes complete with spikes couldn’t cope with well and on his test walk this morning he fell 2 or 3 times. This weekend’s nature walk is cancelled. Use the extra time for enjoying pancakes and doughnuts , and be sure and come back—the trail will still be there.

Mother Nature didn’t come through with maple sap, so the Great Mountain Forest sugarhouse will not be open this weekend. Fortunately there is still some left from last year and you can have it on pancakes both Saturday and Sunday or buy it while you’re in town. Check the Icebox Cafe or the Berkshire Country Store.
To get information about Great Mountain Forest and its maple syrup production, visit its website or call the forestry office at 860-542-5422.

Three more events have been added to the lineup for Saturday and Sunday, too late for our printable schedule.
1. A nature hike to a beaver pond on Saturday (read more) only.
2. A Conservation Commission raffle and book sale on Saturday (read more) and Sunday (read more).
3. A Tango concert on Sunday (read more).

Ice skating has been cancelled: We’re sorry to say that the fire department has been unable to maintain the skating rink in good enough condition to use during Winter Weekend in Norfolk.

Route 44 is under construction west of Norfolk: Visitors coming from the west on Route 44 will encounter a traffic light just outside the main village. Please observe it carefully, as traffic coming toward you is not visible until it gets very close. Usually the waiting time is very short.
A note about Route 272 south: Route 272 is no longer blocked, although visitors to addresses on Old Goshen Road and Smith Road must use Bruey Road and turn south on Old Goshen Road.
